Topic of the Week – Tannins, March 16, 2026
This week, I added almond leaves to the tank to provide natural tannins for the shrimp. They really enjoy it, and it’s a simple way to reduce stress and create a more natural environment. The water does take on a slight color from the tannins, but that’s completely normal and actually beneficial, it mimics the conditions shrimp would experience in the wild. I make this a regular part of my routine because it’s healthy for the shrimp and adds a nice natural touch to the tank. Still unsure of how I feel about the waters color but who cares if they like it.

The aquarium hobby has traditionally been dominated by men, and I wanted to create a welcoming space just for the “girlies.” Here, anyone can learn, ask questions, share experiences, and have fun exploring this amazing hobby, without feeling out of place. It’s all about community, curiosity, and enjoying aquatics together!
Why are you into aquatics?
I’ve been fascinated by marine life for as long as I can remember. I even thought I might become a marine biologist! While that path didn’t quite happen…yet, my love for fish never faded. Over the years, I’ve taught myself how to raise shrimp, care for fish, and even explore aquaponics. I’m excited to share what I’ve learned, including the mistakes I’ve made along the way, so others can enjoy this hobby and grow alongside me.
